Whitetail hair is the most popular for spinning and stacking hair bugs.This hair is found on the side of the deer between the front and the back legs. Most whitetail have at least five different textures of hair on their hide. The hair must be selected based on length and texture. Although there are 17 subspecies of Whitetail deer in North America, the longest hair with the essential texture is usually found in only 3 of the subspecies in the northern latitudes after November 15th. Some whitetail do not have hair over 1 1/2″ even in the late fall season. At least 50% of the hides inspected do not have the correct length and texture for tieing large hair bugs. Hygrading the hides is critical and then selecting the correct hair from the right part of the hide is just as critical. Length 1 1/4″ – 1 1/2″.
