PreSchoolK This spare story in rhyme shows a little boy in a safari outfit armed with a camera going out to explore his house and yard. Halpern uses a bright palette and outlines the simple drawings in bold black lines. The pictures are somewhat flat, but their clarity will appeal to young readers. Scientists may take issue with the broad use of the word “bugs” to include insects, arachnids, and nematodes. While the rhyme scheme is uneven and the text is simple, the endpapers include some intriguing “bug” facts that may catch the attention of older readers. PreSGr. 2 A little boy in a pith helmet and camera explores bugs on the windowsill, outside in the yard, and even at night. Endpapers decorated with photos of bugs (and one of his baby sister, who “bugs” him with love) add to the fun. Bright colors, bold outlines, and close-up illustrations keep the focus on tiny subjects in a big way. Engaging as well as informative. Connie Fletcher, American Library Association
